Treats

I see a lot of horses that are pushy and disrespectful because they were taught to be using treats. I am not against treats, but they should be given correctly. I never give a horse a treat if he’s looking for it. When I do give a horse a treat, I want him to think it’s a big deal. I do not use treats to win a horses’s affection and sure as hell not to bribe a horse. Treats are a bonus for exceptional effort and should be a surprise to a horse when he’s not expecting it. If you constantly feed your horse treats, he starts looking for them, then expecting them by mouthing and pushing on you and people wonder why their horse is a shithead. If a horse is looking for a treat, he doesn’t get one.
